I believe that almost everyone has the gift of
song in them. I don't mean that everyone is capable of writing a
song that a large audience will want to hear. Some people might be
able to create only a simple melody expressing a single thought. It
might be a song sung alone in the shower. It might be a song that
ends up on a popular CD or being performed in front of a large,
worldwide audience. The true success of a worship song should not
be measured in the number of dollars it generates, or the size of
its audience, but the impact it has on the composer's heart, and
the blessing it brings to God's heart.
Whether you are an accomplished musician and songwriter, or a person who knows little about music but is touched by its power, I pray that this book will inspire you. I pray that it will speak to your heart in some way and help you grow closer to our God. After all, He gave us music; He gave us all the worship songs we enjoy so much. Over the past few years I've been asked to speak or teach at several songwriting classes and workshops.
Many of the people I meet at these events want to know how to be creative. Honestly, I'm not even sure that creativity is something that can be taught, and I don't consider myself to be an educator or author. So, I'm writing this book in a manner that I hope will simply communicate my own personal songwriting experiences. As a person to whom God has given some creativity I can share with you the process I go through when I'm writing a worship song. I can tell you about some of the things that inspire me and some of the things I listen for. Hopefully, you'll take that information and tap into your own creativity; you'll find a creative process, a creative style that works for you-something that is unique to you.
It is very important that everyone reading this book realize that it is not a "rule book." One of the reasons I've not written anything before this on how to compose a worship song is that I don't believe true creativity needs to be or should be stifled by a bunch of "how to" rules. Many of the books on songwriting make a list of "by the book" rules. Some of these may be helpful, yet many encourage the songwriter to create by an established formula.
If you use this book at all in your desire to write worship songs, use it as a set of guidelines, a jumping off point for your own brand of creativity. Rules for the art of songwriting are a great place to start and a fine way to learn, but don't be afraid to break them.
Worship Songs-Something Special
I believe that music was ultimately created to give glory to God. Therefore, worship songs are among the most precious, beautiful and valuable of all art forms in the eyes of God.
To me, worship songs are special because they are the music of the people-the music of the average person. Hardly anything is more meaningful or fulfilling than knowing that I'm helping someone else express passionate worship to their Creator through my songs. For thousands of years the Lord has used the gift of music and song to touch people in a way that few other means of communication can.
It is commonly acknowledged that we are in the midst of a worship awakening, and a big part of this awakening are the songs that are currently being written.......
All this to say, worship songs are something special. There will never be too many of them. These are the songs that move God's heart.
